Mat-Su Senior Services offers several programs focused on senior health:
State of Alaska’s Better Choices, Better Health: Living Well Alaska, a Chronic Disease Self Management program developed by The Stanford School of Medicine.
This nation-wide proven program provides education and teaches skills needed in the day-to-day management of chronic disease management. Subjects include: dealing with frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation; appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance; appropriate use of medications; how to communicate effectively with family, friends, and health care professionals; good nutrition; how to evaluate new treatments and how to maintain and/or increase lifes activities. This twelve week program has proven effective in preventing falls and reduction of time needed to heal following a fall. Check the Calendar for dates and times.
Strong Seniors: Exercise specifically formulated for seniors to strengthen muscles and increase flexibility to enhance overall health.
Blood Pressure Monitoring: A dedicated group of volunteer retired nurses offer blood pressure checks on
MSSS State of the Art Exercise Room: Various types of exercise equipment including stationary bikes, treadmills and weights are available for un-supervised use during regular center hours. In addition, exercise DVD’s are free to use in the exercise classroom or exercise equipment area. Open Monday thru Friday 7:30 am – 5:00 pm.
Annual Health Fair: MSSS hosts an annual health fair that provides a variety of information from local health and social services organizations. Flu shots and health tests including blood work and blood pressures are among free or low costs services provided during the health fair.
Walking Path: A designated scenic pathway placed on MSSS’s campus provides an opportunity to enjoy Alaska’s fresh air and wildlife. Open during summer hours only.
